The Raksura Colony Tree – Homepage

In August 2019, the 77th World Science Fiction Convention will take place in Dublin:

Dublin 2019 – An Irish Worldcon

If you’re coming to Dublin to join in the fun and are interested in creating things with needle and thread, this is your chance to be an active part in a community art project.

Martha Wells’ “Books of the Raksura”-Series was nominated for a Best Series Hugo in 2018. One of the things that drew me into the series was the world-building – a colony living in a giant mountain tree that’s studded with platforms all around that are used by the inhabitants for all kinds of different things – hunting, gardening, fishing, outlooks for the guards … a whole ecosystem – so how might that actually look like? I made a start, just to try things out:

Samples showing the some of the different crafts possible.

Fiber crafts lend themselves nicely for creating all kinds of natural forms, and the Hyperbolic Crochet community project at Worldcon 75 in Helsinki turned itself into a always-busy meeting point for crafty folks. I’m going for something slightly more ambitious for Dublin – and I need your help to make it reality! The kind of model I’m envisioning consists of lots of relatively small pieces – great for many helping hands.

This blog is intended for sharing and discussing ideas of how to bring this model alive and to coordinate contributions so we can put together an awesome display when we meet in Dublin in August.
